Phil Foden is ready says City Catalan boss
Pep Guardiola has suggested Phil Foden could be handed a start when Manchester City face Lyon in the Champions League.
City are without Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne for Tuesday's clash at the Groupama Stadium, which gives City Catalan boss limited options in midfield positions.
Foden has only played three minutes in the Champions League so far this season but has made seven substitute appearances in the Premier League.
However, Guardiola says the 18-year-old midfielder is ready to play a part against Lyon should he be required by City, who are top of Group F, three points clear of the Ligue 1 side.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Guardiola highlighted the improvements he has witnessed in the England U21 International.
“When he appeared in the last pre-season, I was so impressed. He is now stronger and able to play with us – without a doubt."
“He plays so aggressively with the ball and without, he is so intense. Every time he plays, he is so good. That’s why he is ready. He is part of the squad.”
Gabriel Jesus has also not travelled with the rest of the City squad but Guardiola confirmed the Brazil striker's injury is not serious.
"Gabriel had a muscular problem in training but isn't ready. Bernardo is in the last step before being fit, Gundogan also has a problem in his feet," Pep Guardiola said.
"I prefer to have all the squad to choose [from] but it is what it is. We have to adapt with the guys that are here and we will try to do a good job and the others who aren't here will do their best to recover."
Manchester City go into today clash with hopes of getting maximum three points against a side they suffered their first and only defeat this season, nevertheless, Guardiola's men only needs a draw to secure a place in the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League.
